ORAcollect assisted saliva collection.

ORAcollect is a saliva microsampling device from DNA Genotek that collects with an integrated sponge rather than a spit funnel: the sponge in the cap absorbs oral fluid or swabs the inside of the mouth, and closing the device releases a stabilising buffer that mixes with the sample and preserves the DNA at the moment of collection. Per the manufacturer, this makes collection easy for infants, young children and anyone who struggles to produce saliva on demand, and the ambient-stable tube travels at room temperature and reaches the laboratory intact. Humans Nexus curates and supplies the device on its platform and assembles the clinical-grade kit around it; DNA Genotek is the legal manufacturer.

Why it matters

Not everyone can spit into a funnel (infants, young children and many patients simply can&rsquo);t on cue. ORAcollect is designed by the manufacturer to collect saliva with a sponge instead, so the same ambient-stable, buffer-locked DNA can be captured from people a spit device can’t reach, and travel by ordinary tracked post to the lab.

Which saliva device?

Two DNA Genotek saliva devices, one decision: how the sample is given. ORAcollect uses a sponge in the cap to collect or swab (the gentler route for children, infants and anyone who can&rsquo);t spit on cue. ORAgene takes a full spit through a funnel, the higher-yield option for adult self-collection.

Both share DNA Genotek’s liquid stabilisation (a bacteriostatic buffer that holds DNA at room temperature for a year or more) and both run on standard laboratory robotics without tip-cutting. How is it different from ORAgene?

ORAcollect uses a sponge to collect or swab, which suits children, infants and anyone who can’t spit; ORAgene is a spit device for adult self-collection and a larger, higher-yield sample. Both are DNA Genotek saliva devices sharing the same liquid stabilisation.

Does it need cold chain?

No. Per the manufacturer, the device stabilises the sample at collection, so the ambient-stable tube is designed to ship at room temperature by standard tracked return.
